Mettur Dam is set to be opened for irrigation on September 1. The government says water will be released for 45 days depending on inflow and storage conditions.
CPM state secretary P. Shanmugam has opposed the 45-day release, arguing that Samba paddy cultivation needs at least 120 days of assured water. Farmers have called for continuous water supply to protect the crop.
